EXPRESS DROP CHIEFS FOR FIRST HOME WIN

The Coquitlam Express picked up their first victory at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre with a 5-2 win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. The win also snapped a mini 3 game losing streak the Express had entering the contest.

The Express were facing a Chilliwack squad that was still looking to find it's stride with just 1 win in and 8 goals in their first 6 games.

The Chiefs entered this game with just 1 powerplay goal in 30 opportunities this season. They caught a break with the man advantage as they opened the scoring. Zach Diamantoni's centering pass bounced in off the skate of Gordy Defiel at 4:23.

The lead didn't last long as less than 3 minutes later Bo Pieper unleashed a rocket from the slot off a feed from his brother Canon just under the cross bar for his 7th goal of the season.

49 seconds later the Express were in the lead as BCHL scoring leader Adam Rockwood set up Corey Mackin for his 6th goal of the season.

There would have been more goals in the opening frame were it not for some great saves by both Gordy Defiel and Lyndon Stanwood.

Stanwood turned aside Mackin on a shorthanded breakaway after he picked the pocket of a Chiefs defenceman breaking out of his own zone. Defiel's best save came as he got the glove down and turned aside Jake Hand as he tried to tuck the puck around the Express netminder.

Captain Ryan Rosenthal extended the Express lead in the second period as his high shot from the slot handcuffed Stanwood and trickled into the net for a 3-1 Express lead.

Mackin added his second of the game midway through the period snapping home a quick shot from the slot.

This game was decided early in the third period. Chilliwack cut the lead down to two on their second powerplay goal of the game off the stick of Carter Cochrane at 1:36. Moments later the Chiefs were back on the powerplay and had the momentum looking to cut the lead to one. But the Express pressure on the puck on the penalty kill forced a turnover and an odd man rush up ice and Ryan Rosenthal was able to jam the puck under Stanwood for his second of the game to give the Express a 5-2 lead.

The Chiefs kept pressing but couldn't find another goal as Defiel finished with a 42 save outing to post the victory in the Express crease.

Corey Mackin and Ryan Rosenthal each finished with 2 goals and an assist. BCHL scoring leader Adam Rockwood and Canon Pieper each had a pair of helpers.

The teams will do it all over again in the second of a home and home Saturday night in Chilliwack.
