EXPRESS HOME GAME HIGHLIGHTS
Better later than never, but here's the highlights of Surrey's 3-1 win over the Express Wednesday night. And below is the highlights from Powell River's 2-1 win.
NHL CONSIDERING BCHL OT FORMAT?
I personally am a huge supporter of the BCHL's overtime format that sees 5 minutes played at 4 on 4, then an additional 5 minutes played 3 on 3 with any penalties in the 3 on 3 resulting in penalty shots.

The Canucks are finally getting around to working on their shootout skills, but it seems the league may be looking at de-emphasizing the breakaway competition to decide tied games.
Detroit GM Ken Holland is proposing changes to the NHL's current overtime rules where teams play four aside for five minutes before going to the shootout if no winner has been determined.
Holland's suggestion is to go to an eight-minute overtime, with the first four minutes at four-on-four and the second four minutes three-on-three.
A shootout would still be held if no goal is scored.
The idea, of course, is that if four-on-four doesn't produce a winner, then three-on-three certainly will.
Interestingly, the concept is a variation of the OT system used by the B.C. Hockey League since the 2000-01 season.
The BCHL instead uses a 10-minute overtime, with the first five minutes at four-on-four and the next five at three-a-side.
What happens if there is a penalty during the three-on-three?
It's a penalty shot.
The idea came from Dr. Duncan Wray, the longtime owner/governor of the Vernon Vipers. Apparently, he made the proposal two times before it was accepted by BCHL governors.
The BCHL does't do shootouts and the OT format certainly doesn't leave many tie games. Last season, the junior league played 510 games and only seven resulted in ties.
"I never really liked the shootout," said Wray. "We had it in the 1990s and I think it took us three years to win one. To me a shootout is like settling a baseball game with a home-run derby. Ken Holland asked me about it a couple of years ago, so that might be where this comes from."
Canucks forward Jeff Tambellini's played in the BCHL when the system was first introduced.
"There were not too many ties," he said. "The game opens up so much when you get to three-on-three. It's pretty exciting and sooner or later somebody is going to score. It's fun to watch."
Even though Tambellini is an excellent shootout player, he said he still prefers to win a game the traditional way.
"I like to win a game in overtime," he said. "It feels that much better."
Canucks captain Henrik Sedin is leery of the extra three minutes that would be added onto OT in an already long and demanding season.
"I would like a game to be decided playing hockey," he said. "But that's an extra three minutes. That's a long time [to add]. A three-on-three is almost like a shootout -- you'd have a guy going down and shooting and, if he misses, it's a two-on-one the other way. It's exciting but it's a lottery just the same."
Goaltender Roberto Luongo said he doesn't really care either way.
"Shootouts are fun, except when you lose," he said. "I think the fans enjoy it. Three-on-three, I don't know what it would look like, really. I know when we do that in practice for fun there's a lot of ice out there and a lot of scoring chances. It really doesn't matter to me."

When the NHL announced they were adopting shootouts to solve tie games following a 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime I was dissapointed. I prefer tie games to be decided in a manner that closely resembles actual game play.
I hoped the NHL would adopt the BCHL's overtime format and then go to a shootout as a last resort. The shootout can be exciting and dramatic. Just ask the Rangers and Flyers who decided who was going to the playoffs in the skills contest on the final day of the season last year.
This past summer during the a summer camp in Toronto, the NHL tried a number of tweaks to the game that may or may not be seen in NHL games in the future.
At that camp a similar overtime format to the BCHL's was looked at with four minutes of 4 on 4 and an additional four minutes of 3 on 3.
Now I read today that the NHL is taking a little closer look at that format.

ANOTHER ONE GOAL LOSS FOR EXPRESS
The streak has hit 6, losses that is for Coquitlam. It was another tight game that saw the Express fall one goal short in a 2-1 set back to the Powell River Kings.
It's amazing how things have changed for this Express team. Not too long ago we were talking about a team that was averaging 7 goals for per game during a 4 game stretch.
Now they have scored 1 goal in each of their last 3 games.
The Express knew they were facing one of their toughest challenges of the season. The Kings entered the contest as the best defensive team in the BCHL. Powell River has allowed just 34 goals this season for a team goals against average of 1.8.
Coquitlam knew they had to bury the few chances that they would get. And goaltender Luke Hernandez had to have one of his best performances of the season that allowed his team to have a chance to win.
Powell River opened the scoring on Jon Jutzi's screened point shot that beat Hernandez to the short side.
Jason Grecica thought he pulled the Express even midway through the first, but he contacted the puck with a high stick just before he put it in the net.
Riley Mcintosh tallied for the Express just before the period was done when he jumped into the rush and wired a wrist shot past Micheal Garteig for his 3rd goal of the season.
The game remained tied at one until early in the 3rd period.
With Matt Mazzarolo sitting in the penalty box for hooking, Powell River won the ensuing faceoff and Mike Sones tipped Justin Dasilva's point shot past a screened Hernandez to give Powell River a 2-1 lead.
Coquitlam had a great chance to pull even when they had a two man advantage for a full two minutes.
The Express couldn't convert on the glorious opportunity as they looked for the perfect play which never truly materialized.
The Kings killed off the powerplay and killed the Express' chances at a comeback. That capped a night that saw the Express go 0 for 5 on the powerplay. Now the man advantage is a frigid 1 for 26 in the last 5 games.
Special teams continues to be a difference maker for the Express. The penalty killing has been pretty solid as of late. However, the game winning goal did come on a powerplay.
The penalty killing has killed of 21 of the last 25 shorthanded situations.
At this point of the season the question becomes, where has the offence gone? The Express top offensive weapons for the most part have disappeared.
Veteran Brad Reid who is second in team scoring has just 1 assist in his last 5 games. And he has just one goal in his last 8 games.
Destry Straight has just 2 assists since his 3 goal 1 assist performance 6 games ago. A 7-5 win in Surrey.
Garrick Perry is pointless in his last 3 games, 1 assist in his last 4, and 1 goal in his last 6 games.

At some point however, the moral victories can no longer be tolerated and results are required. Right now the Express aren't getting the results they need.

They have now dropped to 6th place in the Coastal Conference. And the Nanaimo Clippers in 7th aren't that far behind just 4 points back with 3 games in hand.

EXPRESS DESERVED BETTER IN LOSS TO EAGLES
It was the Express' 5th straight loss, but they deserved a much better fate in a 3-1 setback to the Surrey Eagles.
Surrey did get off to a good start leading 2-0 after 20 minutes. Mitchell Deacon scored the Express lone goal in the 2nd period to cut the lead to one.
But the story was the third period from an Express point of view.
They were all over the Surrey Eagles. Coquitlam had some unreal scoring chances, but somehow couldn't put a second puck past Andrew Hunt. Austin Carroll, Brad Reid, Riley Mcintosh had chances that still have me shaking my head how none of them went in.
Eagles captain Tyler Morley put a dagger in the heart of the Express sealing the win for the visitors with an empty net goal.
Special teams was good and bad for the Express. The good was killing off all 5 shorthanded situations. Including a pair of 5 on 3 shorthanded situations.
The Express penalty killing is having its best run of the season. Wednesday's game was the 4th time in the last 5 outings the Express have been perfect on the penalty killing. They have killed off 17 of 20 shorthanded situations in that time.
But the powerplay had another poor outing going 0 or 5. The powerplay is just 1 for 21 in the last 4 games.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Express Friday night as they welcome Powell River to town. The Kings sit tied for top spot in the Coastal Conference with 26 points. And their BCHL best 33 goals allowed isn't a welcome sight for a club struggling to score goals.

CURRENT EXPRESS MEET FORMER EXPRESS
Yesterday the Express had a chance to go down to Rogers Arena to watch the Colorado Avalanche game day skate. And have a word with Express alumni David Jones and Brandon Yip now regulars with the Avalanche.

It was a familiar scene for Brandon Yip and David Jones at Rogers Arena on Tuesday morning, the NHL players meeting members of the Junior A Coquitlam Express.
Except last time Yip and Jones went through it, they were the pups with the Express and Brendan Morrison was the NHLer.
"It was always cool to come down and watch the guys warm up and see both teams," the 26-year-old Jones said after the Avs morning skate Tuesday.
"It's crazy to think that not too long ago that was me up in the stands and now we're playing here.
"Absolutely I remember coming down to the rink and watching the pregame skate," the 25-year-old Yip added. "It was a pretty cool experience."
Yip played hockey in Maple Ridge, Jones in North Van minor, and both are former Express captains.
Both were drafted way, way down the board, Yip in the eighth round in 2004, Jones in the ninth in 2003.
Those rounds don't even exist any more.
Jones, taken with the fifth-last pick at No. 288 (the Canucks passed three picks earlier), has the added honour of being the lowest draft pick of the Nordiques/ Avalanche franchise to actually play in the NHL.
"But you know what?" Jones said. "It was really exciting. I had no idea I was going to get drafted.
"I got a call from my mom and she said, 'You got drafted, what does that mean?'
"I was like, 'Wow -- that's amazing.' "
The Avs, in fact, had a heated argument about whom to take with that last pick in 2003.
Scout Glen Cochrane, the former Canuck and Flyer, insisted it be Jones and, as others argued against him Cochrane phoned Express GM Darcy Rota around 8 a.m. Vancouver time.
"Glen really believed in David, that he'd one day play in the NHL," said Rota, in the stands with his players for Tuesday morning's Avs skate. "He said to me, 'Darcy, tell me again about David Jones.' I said, 'Glen, you and I have talked so many times about this player -- take him.' "
Jones and Yip are among five Avs who played their minor hockey in the Lower Mainland, but only Scott Hannan (23rd overall in 1997) was drafted higher than the seventh round.
"I just kept focusing on getting to the next level," Yip said.
Jones was 2-1-3 recently against Detroit and is trying to put a dismal season last year behind him: When he suffered a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 28, 2009, he was second on the team in goals (10 in 23 games), and led the Avs in game winners (three) and short-handed goals (two).
Yip had 11 goals in 32 games last season, and jumped out of the gate at 1-1-2 plus a shootout winner in his first three games this season before a pulled groin slowed him down.
"There's no secret to Yip's game," said Avs head coach Joe Sacco.
"He's a hard-working guy, he's got to be a real thorn in the side of the opposition, that has to be his game.
"And he's got the ability to put the puck in the net at times."

TURRIS SCORES FIRST GOALS OF SEASON
The former Express scored his first two goals of the season Saturday night as the Coyotes erased a 3-0 third period deficit to the Carolina Hurricanes before falling 4-3 in overtime.

PERRY COMMITS TO ALASKA-FAIRBANKS
The Coquitlam Express are pleased to announce the NCAA commitment for the 2011/2012 season of Garrick Perry to Alaska Fairbanks.
"We are extremely proud for Perry as he has been a great leader for the program" says Head Coach and Director of Hockey operations Jon Calvano, "he has shown tremendous loyalty throughout his three years with the Express."
Perry will join fellow Express alumni Carlo Finucci. Finucci is currently in his third year at Alaska Fairbanks and played on the 2006 Burnaby Express Royal Bank Cup Championship team and the following year.
Alaska Fairbanks is a Division 1 school and currently ranked 9th in College Hockey Polls.

STRAIGHT & DEACON LISTED AS PLAYERS TO WATCH
NHL Central Scouting released it's first list of NHL propsects to watch for June's draft in Minnesota.
Rookies Destry Straight and Mitchell Deacon were both listed among the 7 BCHL players on the list.
Straight is listed as an "A" prospect. Or a must see player who could either be a first or second round pick.
The 17 year old has gotten off to a fantastic start to his BCHL career. He is currently tied with Brad Reid for the team lead in scoring with 22 points in 15 games.
"It's a fantastic recognition for Destry and for the Express organization," head coach Jon Calvano says. "Destry has the ability to make plays at a high speed and he's got great vision. He's got an impressive skill set and he's shown very quickly that he has the ability to succeed at this level.
Mitchell Deacon is listed as a "C" prospect. Or projected as a player that could be selected as a late round selection.
Deacon has 2 goals in 12 games this season. His 6'3 size is what NHL teams are looking at as a possible NHL draft pick come June.
The other 5 players listed include 4 Trail Smoke Eaters, Sam Mellor "B" prospect, Travis St. Denis, Joey Baker and Eric Walker "C" prospects. Westside defenceman Micheal King rounds out the list as a "B" prospect.

EXPRESS MAKE TWO TRADES
The Express made two trades on Monday. First they sent Zac Ashdown to the Prince George Spruce Kings. Plus they also sent Jesse Halikas to the Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL).
The Express received future considerations in return in both trades.
Ashdown had 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points in 12 games this season. Halikas had 2 goals and 1 assist in 11 games this season.

EXPRESS SPUTTER TO CONSECUTIVE LOSSES
For the first time this season the Express have lost consecutive games.
They dropped a pair of 4-3 decisions to the Westside Warriors in regulation Friday. And to the Merritt Centennials in overtime Saturday.
Friday, the Express had the lead on 3 seperate occasions, only to let it slip away.
Jason Grecica and Alex Petan scored first period powerplay goals.
But by the time the third period began, the Express were trailing 4-3. And the Warriors stifled the life out of the Express in their attempt to mount a comeback.
The Warriors aggresive forechecking and up ice pressure prevented the Express from getting a shot on goal until the 16 minute mark of the third period. And when they did get shots through, Kevin Boyle was there to shutdown the the Express attack. Boyle had 22 saves for his second win of the season.
Grayson Downing and Tyler Brickler each had 1 goal and 1 assist for the Warriors. Zac Ashdown led the Express attack with 3 points. 1 goal and 2 assists.
To quote Jon Calvano about the effort from his hockey club Friday, "Worst game of the season."
Well if Friday was bad in the eyes of the coach, the performance Saturday wasn't much better in Merritt.
The one win Centennials jumped all over the Express from the drop of the puck. Forcing them into defensive zone turnovers, bad break out passes and icings.
As a result, the Cents had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Merritt coming off 2 OT losses to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Penticton Vees were gaining confidence, and they were rewarded for their hard work vs. the Express.
Matt Mazzarolo looked to spark his team by fighting Dylan Playfair early in the 2nd period.
The fight appeared to have the desired effect. Garrick Perry scored seconds later off a faceoff in the Merritt zone to get the Express on the board. Then just 10 seconds following Perry's goal, Massimo Lamacchia scored to pull the Express within one.
The two goals gave the Express life and they started to turn their play around. But weren't rewarded with the equalizer.
That didn't come until the final minute of the third period off a won faceoff in the Merritt zone. Alex Petan tipped a Garrick Perry shot to tie the game at 3 and force overtime.
The extra session didn't last long however. Brandon Pfiel the former Express AP came down the left wing and roofed a shot over the shoulder short side on Luke Hernandez for his second of the game to give Merritt just their 2nd win this season.
The two losses for Coquitlam was an opportunity lost to stay within striking distance of the Langley Chiefs and Powell River Kings for the top 2 positions in the Coastal Conference standings.
The Express are now 6 points back of Langley and are 2 back of Powell River. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Victoria Grizzlies are just 4 points back of Coquitlam but they have 4 and 3 games in hand on the Express.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Express as they travel to Langley to face the Coastal Conference leaders Thursday night.

To quote Jon Calvano about the effort from his hockey club Friday, "Worst game of the season."
Well if Friday was bad in the eyes of the coach, the performance Saturday wasn't much better in Merritt.
The one win Centennials jumped all over the Express from the drop of the puck. Forcing them into defensive zone turnovers, bad break out passes and icings.
As a result, the Cents had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Merritt coming off 2 OT losses to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Penticton Vees were gaining confidence, and they were rewarded for their hard work vs. the Express.
Matt Mazzarolo looked to spark his team by fighting Dylan Playfair early in the 2nd period.
The fight appeared to have the desired effect. Garrick Perry scored seconds later off a faceoff in the Merritt zone to get the Express on the board. Then just 10 seconds following Perry's goal, Massimo Lamacchia scored to pull the Express within one.
The two goals gave the Express life and they started to turn their play around. But weren't rewarded with the equalizer.
That didn't come until the final minute of the third period off a won faceoff in the Merritt zone. Alex Petan tipped a Garrick Perry shot to tie the game at 3 and force overtime.
The extra session didn't last long however. Brandon Pfiel the former Express AP came down the left wing and roofed a shot over the shoulder short side on Luke Hernandez for his second of the game to give Merritt just their 2nd win this season.
The two losses for Coquitlam was an opportunity lost to stay within striking distance of the Langley Chiefs and Powell River Kings for the top 2 positions in the Coastal Conference standings.
The Express are now 6 points back of Langley and are 2 back of Powell River. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Victoria Grizzlies are just 4 points back of Coquitlam but they have 4 and 3 games in hand on the Express.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Express as they travel to Langley to face the Coastal Conference leaders Thursday night.

EXPRESS LEAP PAST EAGLES
The Coquitlam Express leaped past the Surrey Eagles and pulled into a tie for 2nd place in the Coastal Conference following the Express 7-5 win in Surrey Wednesday night.

Destry Straight continued to dazzle by scoring his first BCHL hat-trick and added an assist.
The Express didn't get off to the start they wanted falling behind 2-0 before the game was 8 minutes old.
But by the time the first period was done the Express battled back to tie it on Straight's first of the game shorthanded and a powerplay goal by Jason Grecica.

For Grecica, it was his 6th goal of the season and 4th vs. his old Surrey Eagle mates this season.
Riley Mcintosh gave the Express their first lead in the second period just firing the puck towards the net and it hit a body and bounced past Vinny Lessard.
Scott Holm pulled the Eagles even with his first BCHL goal in his first BCHL game at 15:47. But the game didn't remain tied for long thanks to the Express exciting rookie.
Destry Straight took a feed from Brad Reid and quicky deked to his backhand and put it past Lessard to give the Express a one goal lead going to the third.

Richard Vanderhoek pulled the Eagles even at 4 with a powerplay marker at 3:47.
The Express had a response of their own on the powerplay shortly thereafter. Garrick Perry made a nice spin back hand pass cross crease to Brad Reid who buried it to re-store the Express lead.
Then just 51 seconds later Garrick Perry was hauled down going to the Eagles goal and was awarded a penalty shot. The Express Captain made no mistake wiring a quick shot past Lessard to give the Express a 6-4 lead.

Jeff Vanderlugt set up a dramatic finish by pulling the Eagles back within one with a powerplay goal with 2:23 to go.
Vanderlugt then appeared to have the game tying goal on his stick with just over a minute remaining as he wired a shot from the high slot but Khaleed Devji came up with his biggest save of the game to keep the Express in the lead.
Then in the dying seconds Garrick Perry and Destry Straight teamed up to get the puck out of the Express zone. Then Perry fed Straight who iced the game with his hat-trick goal.
It was the second straight game that a Express player had a 3 goal outing following Massimo Lamacchia's 3 goal performance Sunday afternoon vs. Cowichan Valley.
The Express continue to light the lamp with quite a regularity. They have now scored 28 goals in their last 4 games maintaining 7 goal per game average in that time.
The Express are now 4-1 this season vs. the Surrey Eagles. The win was the first this season by a road team between the Express and Eagles. Coquitlam also clinched a winning record vs. the Surrey Eagles in the 7 games played between the two clubs from the end of September to the final 2 meetings between these two clubs through the end of October.
Khaleed Devji picked up the win for the Express stopping 37 of the 42 shots sent his way.
But for all their offensive exploits, the coaches would still like to see the Express improve their defensive game. It can be a little easy to overlook the fact that the Express are allowing 3.7 goals per game when they're putting an average of 4.8 pucks in the opposition net per game.
And I'm sure the coaches would like to see the 34.8 shots on goal allowed per game average come down.
The Express are back in action Friday night at home vs. the Westside Warriors.

YIP & JONES LEAD AVS TO WIN OVER WINGS
David Jones scored twice and added an assist, Brandon Yip had an assist and scored the game winning goal in the shootout as the Avalanche knocked off the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 Tuesday night.
That comes after Yip scored his first goal of the season one night earlier in Philadelphia.

LAMACCHIA BCHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Coquitlam Express forward Massimo Lamacchia has been named the British Columbia Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending October 10th, the league announced Monday.
Lamacchia enjoyed a pair of outstanding games over the weekend that helped extend Coquitlam's home record to 5-1 on the season. On Friday, the 19-year old assisted on four Express tallies in a 7-4 victory over the Surrey Eagles. And on Sunday afternoon, he netted a hat trick and added another three helpers in a 9-2 triumph over the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
Overall, Lamacchia recorded three goals and seven assists in three games. The offseason pick-up from Ontario now sits third in team scoring with 17 points through 12 games.
Honourable mentions for this week's award included Penticton Vees defenceman Joey Laleggia, Nanaimo Clippers forward Mike Domsodi and Powell River Kings forward Chad Niddery.

3RD PERIOD COLLAPSE DOES EXPRESS IN
It was a Saturday night to forget for the Express in Langley.
Coquitlam appeared to have the game in control for the first two periods. Then came a disaster of a 3rd period in a 7-5 loss to the Langley Chiefs.
The Express had a 3-1 lead after 2 periods and appeared to be in good shape to pick up a road victory.
Then Langley turned their game up a notch and the Express didn't have much of a response.
The Chiefs exploded for 4 goals in 3:36 to open up a 5-3 lead. The Express did respond with goals by Jason Grecica and Malcom Mckninney's second of the game to tie it at 5.
But with just over 3 minutes remaining in the third period captain Garrick Perry was called for kneeing in the Chiefs zone giving Langley a late powerplay.
And the Chiefs made the Express pay as Kevin Tuohy wired a shot that was tipped over Khaleed Devji to re-store the Chiefs lead.
Langley iced the game with a empty net goal by Trevor Gerling in the final minute.
The Chiefs put a 6 spot on the Express in the third period to salvage the game and extend their winning streak to 6 games.
The Express have little time to lick their wounds and are back in action Sunday afternoon at home vs. the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

EXPRESS CLIP EAGLES WINGS EARLY & OFTEN
It wasn't much of a contest in Coquitlam Friday night as the Express cruised to a 7-4 win over the Surrey Eagles.
The main story was a fast start by the Express and a complete 180 on the special teams compared to last Saturday vs. Langley.
Surrey opened the scoring on a goal by Kyle Madsen. Then the Express pulled away.
Destry Straight scored the goal of the year to date cutting around the Eagle defence then swept the puck past Andrew Hunt to tie it up.
Then Coquitlam struck on back to back 5 on 3's to expand their lead to 3-1 on Straight's 2nd of the game and a goal by Brad Reid. But that wasn't the end of the onslaught, Jessie Halikas and Mitchell Deacon rounded out the scoring and the Express took a 5-1 lead to the room after 20 minutes.
Massimo Lamacchia had a chance to expand the Express lead in the second as he was hauled down on a break after exiting the penalty box and was awarded a penalty shot. Lamacchia couldn't beat Hunt however as he kicked out his left pad and turn aside Lamacchia's bid.
Surrey used the momentum from the save to start to turn the game around. The Eagles responded with goals by Eric Cooper and Bradley McGowan to cut the Express lead to 5-3.
The McGowan goal at 16:01 also meant the end of the night for starter Khaleed Devji after allowing 3 goals on 15 shots.
The goaltending change caught the attention of the Express who responded with Jason Grecica's 3rd goal in 4 games vs. his old mates and Brad Reid's 2nd of the game on powerplay to restore the Express 4 goal lead after 40 minutes.
The Eagles Hayden Trupp rounded out the scoring at 8:53.
The Express powerplay finished 3 for 8 Friday night after going 0 for 5 in a 4-2 loss to Langley last Saturday. The penalty killing had its second perfect night of the season killing off all 7 shorthanded situations. The Eagles helped the Express penalty killing by wiping out 3 of their powerplay opportunities by taking a penalty while on the advantage.
Friday's perfect night on the penalty kill was just the 2nd time in 10 games this season the Express didn't allow a powerplay goal.
Coquitlam has won all 3 games on home ice vs. the Eagles this season.

EXPRESS ADD BENNETT
The Express have added another veteran defenceman bringing in Wade Bennett (90).
He was skating at practice this week with the Express after being let go by the Surrey Eagles earlier this season.
Bennett, the older brother of 2010 BCHL scoring champion Beau Bennett played last season with the Trail Smoke Eaters.
He will make his Express debut tonight vs. his old team the Surrey Eagles.

FORMER EXPRESS STARS IN LAW & ORDER
It wasn't uncommon when Wyatt Russell was with the Express during the 04-05 season to see his famous parents Kurt and Goldie Hawn attend games at the Coquitlam Sports Centre.
Now, the former Express netminder has entered the family business.
He made a guest appearance on the season opening episode of Law and Order Los Angeles which aired Wednesday night.
Wyatt Russell is famous for his parentage: Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. He also happens to be a hard-working, aspiring goaltender. Russell was a member of the Charger hockey program for three semesters before leaving to play professionally and attend film school; he would have been ineligible for transfer if he’d completed a fourth semester of credit hours at UAH.
When we think of following our hockey alumni in their future endeavors, it’s usually as they play professionally; in Wyatt’s case, he’ll be showcasing his acting chops on Law & Order: Los Angeles, where he guest stars in the premiere episode, “Hollywood”. L&O:LA airs on Wednesday night’s at 10pm E/9pm C.
EXPRESS TOP 10 DEBUTS SATURDAY
The production process is well under way. And now the Express top 10 moments in franchise history is ready to make its debut.
Saturday night during the first intermission of the broadcast in Langley will see the first feature hit the airwaves.
This series will run during road broadcasts throughout the remainder of the season. And they will be featured to listen at anytime here on the Coquitlam Expressions blog.

CROWDER BROS. UNITE IN UTAH
Former Express Paul Crowder is headed for Utah. He was named as part of the Utah Grizzlies Training camp roster of the ECHL. He will be there along side his younger brother Tim.
Last season Crowder played with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL scoring 12 goals and 26 points in 79 games.
Crowder was acquired by the Express in a mid-season trade in their final season in Coquitlam in 04-05 putting up 47 points in 48 games. The following season, he was limited to just 14 games during the regular season due to shoulder surgery. But returned to be a vital cog in the Express 2006 Royal Bank Cup championship run.
From there, he played 3 seasons at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He signed a free agent contract with the New York Rangers in March 2009.
Paul is re-united with his brother Tim for the first time since they were teammates in Surrey in 04-05 and in Powell River in 03-04.
The Crowder brothers got their names engraved on the Fred Page Cup in consecutive years when Tim's Eagles won it in 05 and Paul's Express won it in 06.

CHIEFS @ EXPRESS HIGHLIGHTS

SPECIAL TEAMS DERAIL EXPRESS
Special teams played a major role in the Express 4-2 loss to the Langley Chiefs Saturday night.
The penalty killing has struggled all season, but there have not been too many nights where it cost the Express a win. On this night the struggles caught up with the Express.
Entering Saturday night's game, the Express PK was ranked 14th in the BCHL clicking a measly 68.75%.
That number took a big hit as Langley went 3 for 6 with the advantage.
The Express powerplay came into the game on a roll entering the match up ranked 2nd in the BCHL at 31.58%. That number got even better when you look at the Express home powerplay percentage which was 1st overall at 38.89%.
Langley completely shut down the Express powerplay killing off all 5 of their man power situations.
The game was a hard fought battle for the full 60 minutes. Coquitlam opened the scoring on Garrick Perry's re-direction of a Matt Mazzarolo point shot. The goal capped off a fast start for Coquitlam which jumped out to a 8-0 shot on goal advantage.
Langley replied 3 minutes later on their first shot with Mason Blacklock scoring his first goal of the season at 9:44.
The tie didn't last long however, just 34 seconds later the Express re-stored their lead as Jason Grecica jammed home his 3rd goal of the season to re-store the Express lead.
From there the game started to turn in Langley's favour. Penalties plagued the Express for the 2nd half of the first period.
Coquitlam was called for 3 straight penalties in the 2nd half of the opening period. Langley struck on their first advantage with Josh Meyers wiring a shot past Luke Hernandez to tie the game at 2.
The Express did kill off the 2nd and 3rd penalties they were assessed to end the 1st period and the teams were locked at 2 through 20 minutes.
Langley carried the play to open the second period. Working the Express defence in their own zone.
But that's not to say the Express didn't have their chances. Brad Reid had 3 glorious chances in the middle frame but couldn't get any of them past Chiefs goaltender Wyatt Galley.
Langley broke the deadlock late in the 2nd period when former Express Matt Ius tipped a Tim Daly point shot to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead with a powerplay goal.
Midway through the third Langley struck for their third powerplay goal of the game when Brad McBride fired a shot through the legs of Hernandez for the insurance marker.
That goal meant the end of the night for Hernandez after allowing 4 goals on 24 shots. But it didn't mean the Express were about to give up. They pressed in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't get another puck past Galley.
Langley's win maintained their hold of first place in the Coastal Conference. Coquitlam meanwhile suffered their first home ice loss in 4 games this season.
The Express will now look ahead to a big weekend coming up with games vs. Surrey, Langley and Cowichan Valley starting Friday.

TURRIS STICKS IN PHOENIX
After spending all of last season in San Antonio for a year of development, it's much different story for Kyle Turris than the one from a year ago. The former Express superstar will be starting the season with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Coyotes Prepare Roster for Prague

GLENDALE -- After a day off on Thursday, the Coyotes were back at practice on Friday at the Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale in preparation for Sunday’s departure to Europe to start the regular season.
“It (practice) was good today,” Head Coach Dave Tippett said. “…You expect the pace to pick up, but it was very good today. Guys worked hard… There were a lot of things we wanted to make sure were in place before we leave, and the guys worked very hard today.”
Friday’s practice also signaled a shift from competition for roster spots to preparation for meaningful games. Phoenix will play two regular-season games vs. Boston in Prague, Czech Republic on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10.
“It’s one of those things where you have to be ready now,” Doan said. “We have to be ready to go. We have to be ready to start when we get there. It’s pretty much regular season for us once we get there.”
Center Kyle Turris, the third overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft who played all of last season in the American Hockey League, has made the roster. Center Kyle Wellwood, who was in training camp on a tryout basis, was released.
“I feel like, overall, I’ve grown as a player in every aspect,” Turris said. “My defensive game, my protecting the puck, physically stronger, better in face-offs; everything I think has just grown and made me a better player.”
Turris, who played 63 games for the Coyotes in 2008-09, says he’s better prepared for the NHL this time around.
“I think I know what to expect and I’m just going to come work hard every day, have a good start to the season and just continue that on throughout the rest of the season,” Turris said.
Tippett announced the team would take eight defensemen to Europe.
“We’ve got a couple guys that are nursing some minor injuries, so we’re going to keep the defensemen we have right now,” Tippett said. “(Derek) Morris is nursing a bit of an injury, so he’s day-to-day. He’ll be fine to go on the trip, but we just decided to keep eight defensemen around right now.”
Tippett also talked about forwards Viktor Tikhonov and Mikkel Boedker, who were sent to the team's AHL affiliate in San Antonio on Thursday.
“They are very close to NHL ready,” Tippett said. “…Both of them had very good camps. We’re deep on the wings right now. There’s some veterans who are going to get an opportunity to see what they can do, but both those guys are certainly knocking right on the door.”
The Coyotes will play the KHL’s Dinamo Riga in an exhibition game on Wednesday before opening the season on Oct. 9 against the Bruins at the O2 Arena in Prague.

DEKANICH SENT TO AHL
Former Express Mark Dekanich lost out in his bid for the Nashville Predators back up goaltender position. He was sent to the AHL yesterday by the Preds. The opportunity arose for Dekanich when Dan Ellis signed in Tampa Bay in the off-season.
